Rain, rain. Sidewalks clear again.

December rain in recent years has meant clear sidewalks. Harsh cold in three days will also give me dry walking routes. So far, this year about ten walking days were on well under two inches of fluffy snow. 

SEASON of ____ (blank)

The Christmas / followed by calendar NEW YEAR season is a number of happenings.

For me Christmas is the Bible as in Luke and Matthew. New Year is time to set up just the correct number of calendars and reminders.

I stopped buying any gifts years ago. Having said that, I impulse buy a gift some years. This year was a shared pair of Made in the USA (New Hampshire) deerskin mittens.  Great grandchildren are the future owners. May it be so.

I continue to want to mail notes within a routine. Priority is my sons and then a small list of people I see in person.

WALK EVERY DAY.

 Full disclosure close (exceptions: rain all day; away from home; ice).

Today at the beginning of the walk I needed long underwear bottoms. In two days at near zero temperature, I will lay out and wear top and bottom United States Air Force issue protection. 

Sunday then Monday each day drive 220 miles.

 Connecticut Youth Symphony with classical and more recent pieces. Quality sound and talent. An enjoyable evening.

Second snow - with the landscape company active.

 Tuesday,  December 10, 2024. This snow also will be washed away in wind and rain tomorrow night.

Our first snow near the coast.

 Rain fell before dawn followed by slight cooling and a period of snow middle afternoon. Now winds will move in.  I did sight the waxing moon on December 4 about four  days after new moon. 

Two posts on the same day.

December first or the first of any month begins the month.  This calendar month, the lunar month also was December one.  Compare this to next year December,  2025 new moon (beginning of the lunar month) is Dec 19, 2025.

A calendar month and a LUNAR month joined.

 Except for February a Lunar month has fewer days. 

New Moon starts the lunar month as the moon passes the sun from right to left. Using a number, the right ascension of the sun is the sun's position relative to the apparent stationary stars. The moon relative to the stars moves quickly.  Measured by a number, the moon passes the right ascension of the sun more than twelve times in a year.  Recall a year is the earth flying around the sun once.

For me, I need to create a model in three dimensions to grasp earth orbit sun, moon orbit earth.

After Thanksgiving

 Good Food.  Family. 

Singing in the rain, but for me walking in the rain.

 Walking with snow falling is common.  Common for me. 

Kathy and I often talk about rain and a wet rain. WET RAIN defined. When leaving the house and going to the car (choose twenty feet) if soaked that is a wet rain. Most common at camp in early summer.  The atmosphere is saturated and unstable. Black clouds develop meaning the clouds extend to great heights.  The cloud is so thick it blots out the sun.

That cloud then dumps all its moisture within minutes.  A wet rain.

In fall and winter clouds have less vertical development and the rain can be steady but not drenching. So today I am postponing my walk waiting for the sprinkles. It was not a wet rain, but my 35 minutes out would have brought me home damp.

Weather and family.

In this post first family.

Family is distant so most of our impressions are passed on by a second person.  Illness, surgery, school progress are examples.  In comparison using emergency room visits, I have had two so details are part of the story.  One in 2005 and one this summer.  This summer was ill advised but gave me a course of action. Details --- a common old age skin growth may have been infected and had a BAD odor. And of course it was Saturday. The advice was, "see your primary care provider"  (one hundred miles away). To finish the story I did as above getting an appointment two days later. Even better, the follow-on skin referral was very quick. My mind was at ease in less than a week.

Emergency room visits 1500 miles away are mostly unreported or given a brief mention.

We will travel 220 miles south for Thanksgiving. Details of that visit will all be firsthand. And now a mention of weather.  A late in the month Thanksgiving means colder air and snow.  An unknown for this trip.

The FULL MOON and Jupiter.

 The sun is about 93,000,000 miles from earth.

Moon well under 300,000 miles.

Jupiter 385,000,000 miles at times. When the earth is on one side of the sun and Jupiter is on the other side the distances change accordingly.

Of course, the REALPRESIDENT was Abraham Lincoln. Weeks before his death at the end of the Civil War Mr. Lincoln walked into Richmond. Jefferson Davis had left Richmond as the result of the Civil War was apparent.  (Look it up). 

Mr. Lincoln also rode his horse on the streets of Washington D.C. No coward there. Mr. Lincoln, thoughtful, intelligent and he could write and speak in complete sentences.

 He captivated crowds with his knowledge and entertained a tiny staff with his humor. How we have lowered ourselves.  

Calendar month and lunar month close by.

 The new moon will join Venus in the evening sky for a couple nights this week.

One week, later.

Sliver of a moon yesterday morning. Today clouds and temperature near 29F on my walk.

Most of my walk is in an association immediately behind us. We hear the noise of  equipment (mowers, leaf blowers and truck mounted vacuums).  A landscape company gathered leaves all day yesterday. This morning at 6AM falling leaves fell on my head where it was clean twelve hours before. The noise moves into our smaller association shortly. 

In the routine.

My Wednesday as follows.  Up before six to depart near 6AM. At our community center I dry mop a gym floor. The gym is our pickleball spot with four nets.  Slow days mean 20 players show up. Near and over thirty players and the wait time is longer.

Hours are 0830L to 1130L but my early arrival works for me.

A longer weekly note.

In the past I would write a newsletter to a longer address list. Siblings, sons, granddaughters and other. Part of this entry will be an outline of topics. Water in, water out at camp. A deteriorating dock at camp. People days this season (2024).  How many people spent one night. This year two hundred.  Alex; two, Cathy; two and my Kathy and I the other one hundred and ninety-six. 

All the days are documented with Kathy alone a few times and the same for me.  She had a gathering near Westbrook so continued on and spent the night at #20 for example.  I was called at 9AM with a possible 4PM skin appointment. Off I went and spent the night (at #20).

 My nights alone at camp or Kathy's nights alone at camp were about the same.

Repair of rotten wood is always a newsletter item.  In 2022 I put shingles on the outhouse, only then clearly observing all four bottom corners were rotten.  So the end of 2022 and 2023 I bought ground contact framing wood and slowly rebuilt the bottom corners one at a time.  Many vivid details and various jacking and propping up techniques followed. 

For myself and for the camp log book I should add a full page of details. Right now only the door has untreated wood within eighteen inches of the ground.  

A large newer shed was built with supporting beams at the drip line.  So left and right side beams had and will continue to have major rot.  I removed wet ant filled wood for days and used tar and ground contact this summer.  Not even close to a solution. SO A CONTINUING PROJECT EACH YEAR.

We also had a bumper crop of mice.  Usually I trap about thirty.  This year I lost track at near 75.

A plastic bucket with water at the bottom is the best trap.  Seven mice in one bucket one of the nights.

A brother, a sister-in-law arrive by ship.

Yes, they are on day 10 traveling Canada to Florida by way of The St, Lawerence Seaway, and Maritime Provinces. Today in Portland, Maine!

Wednesday, two hour round trip.

 A surgery first used in 1938.

The surgery near my ear is now healing. 

Sort, tools, paper, files.

A good day is to place a handful of outdated letters or notes into recycling.

I do not need the loan papers for our purchase thirty years ago. And so on, and so on.

Pens, blank note pads, three ring binders.  Pick a number. Fifteen to twenty is too many.

Now a new month and tomorrow a lunar month

Camp is closed for the year with water system shut down and power off.

Here in Westbrook, we are back to routine pickleball hosting. Furnace cleaning today. Our Utah journey is behind us.  Birthdays by mail is always our separate jobs.

Tonight is our last night at camp.

 Sunday (tomorrow) I take out the water. The pump and tank must winter warmer than 32F. 

Ten to twelve steps to disconnect and drain the system.

Later I will pull the long ramp off the dock. 

Tuesday and Saturday flights to and from Utah

We arrived near noon Tuesday so had a productive day driving toward Bryce Canyon, NP.

In 1988, in our motorhome we stopped in Richfield, Utah. Tuesday, September 17, 2024, we were back. The town was hosting an International Offroad Rally.  We saw 30 to 60 fancy four seat vehicles. Some on trailers, some driving on the street going back and forth. 

The next morning, we continued on to Bryce Canyon National Park until noon and then to the East entrance of Zion National Park in the afternoon.  Both are impressive, but Zion has an immensity I am unable to describe.

For me the driver it also has a LONG unlit tunnel.  The real issue was transition from brilliant bright sunlight to dark.  

Following we collected Nevada and the city of Salt Lake on other days. A bit of a zoom zoom visit but number of days was fine. 

Driving in Utah gives constant changes in scenery and vistas. All vistas of their own character.

p.s. for Troy. We had an excellent spur of the moment 25-minute tour and missionary conversation with a Morman History Library guide. Pleasent lady widow and living for two years in Salt Lake City at her own expense. A professional photographer and blessed with having adult children within fifty miles.

She was doing her two-year missionary tasking and at least two of her children had done the same prior.

The water system at camp.

Putting the water in and taking it out involves many steps.

In the spring I start by putting the intake hose into garbage cans. This way I isolate possible interior plumbing issues. 

In the same way in fall, I stop pulling water from the brook. This means I am able to devote time to draining and winterizing the long intake hose. 

I become the lift pump once again using garbage cans not the brook as the source. Now the pump is almost gravity fed.

The water level of MOOSELOOKMEGUNTIC Lake, Cupsuptic Lake, the same river and our brook all are almost three feet below the spring level.

To avoid freezing components inside the pump, I move it 114 miles to our condo basement. The expansion tank and various valves also go home. This way I have the winter months to study and improve any leaks.

And there are more steps to fully shut down the seasonal camp water system. Keeps me busy.

The Lawn Boy (green) mower.

 I thought the fuel tank was close to empty. Not so. I allowed the mower to run for well over twenty minutes. I then tried to empty the tank and started the mower once more. Even then many more minutes before the engine stopped. 

This year my luck was better than last. Often the engine started on the first pull. 

For the first four years ( with a new mower) each spring the engine started on the first pull. Advertised and accurate. 

So now spring 2025 will be the next test. 

Labor Day, 2024

THREE, three, four, three. The number of mice in buckets of water in the last four days. 

In addition, I was at the road on my walk and saw a bull moose. Minutes later we ( the moose and I) met again. He went through the woods and came back to the camp road.

In summary, forty eight mice eliminated this summer. A record.

Beginning of the month, now end

 Calendar months and lunar months. 

Lunar months are fun.  First the moon is near the sun but not visible. Then after sunset a sliver of the moon shows up. In two weeks (about) the full moon shines bright.  With some exceptions. Cloud cover at camp rules. Also best viewing of the full moon is in the hours near and after midnight.  That is called typical bedtime. 

In the winter on my five to six AM walk I do see the last sliver of the moon before NEW MOON.

 We live on the surface of the earth so surface weather maps tell us about right now 

Meteorologists thrive on knowing weather patterns at upper levels.

When the pattern at 500mb shows a (U) clouds and various storm or precipitation events are happening.

Here in New England we just had a six day event. And in the mountains it was even worse.

 I drove from camp late afternoon yesterday and Kathy did so this morning. She forgot pills on the counter. Too early of a departure for her.

Now if clouds stay away the sliver of the waxing moon may show itself.

White Christmas at the Maine State Music Theater last night. A tap dance spectacle with two stars and a dancing cast of about sixteen.  Dancing at times on four pianos and then on a grand piano.

 When I put up a post on this WEEKLYABCXYZ.blogspot.com I often use my cell phone.

Why? At camp without Wi-Fi there is no other option. Does that mean I edit better? Not always. So I am home, I have options and keyboard is the option right now.

Do I have any topics? Yes, one a kayak adventure.  Last Thursday we had a significant gushing rain followed by a frontal passage and strong winds. The wind was NNW and gave a long fetch across an upper bay of Cupsuptic Lake.  I went into the wind to get to a GPS waypoint.  However, the return was mostly cross wind with serious swells and waves.  I fought (struggled) into and then cross wind and finally made into the sheltered inlet.  I learned a lesson.

 Will Friday, Saturday and Sunday be dry? Here in the mountains clear skies in the morning are almost always followed by fluffy clouds as noon approaches.

I kayak into the bay of the lake and then drift with the wind. Water temperature is now mild. 

Each time I dump out of the kayak I am near the dock. Rarely do I end up on the water without my PFD.

 Hard to believe???

Here in the mountains moisture and wind direction too often give clouds.

And on this clear and calm morning we are driving south and then further south. A graduation.

Our short term camp task is reducing clutter. Then stain portions of the structure and study renovations.

A four log dock is old old and a hazard in spring high water. Not sure of a solution.

When a clockwise turning (anticyclonic) is going on up over northern Hudson Bay Maine and New England get nearly clear skies.

We have it. If it is a blocking high the sun remains for days.

 Today was a harvest day. A rotten birch broke and fell. Over 30 branches were covering one of Kathy's blue berry patches. We drug and then reduced each to twigs, small kindling and firewood. So to repeat the harvest was scrap twigs, kindling and firewood. All the Memorial Day work was in fog, some drizzle and low 50F temperature.

 

An update, wound and windows.

 The installation of  five replacement windows is complete. That was a scheduled project.  Not on the schedule was a bloody left hand. 

Healing time on the worst deep scrap will be at least two weeks.  Two other wounds are closer to the garden variety. 

Do  not push on a wreaking bar when attempting to remove  nails. The heads bent and I was flying into water toward a submerged log. My hand came up with significant blood. My head and face stopped somehow in a safe zone. 

What is the project? Four large parallel logs are covered by cross parallel 2x8 planks.  The dock top layer is six sheets of four foot by eight foot plywood.  I was going step by step to renovate the submerged dangerous thing.  YOU NEED TO SEE IT. 

CAMP. Yr. 2024

 Opening camp is reversing closing steps from last September.

Awning up, rain gutter up, water tank and pump positioned and later fully functional with the long intake plastic pipe pulling water from the brook. 

For fun kayaks are moved onto the dock. 

This year winter damage was caused by beaver and by high water and ice.

I don't chain saw so we need a professional. Also five windows have been on order and now ready to be installed.

Mother's Day food and problem solving.

 On our drive from camp back to #20 Kathy ordered her gift , (lobster rolls for two) she remembered me.

At camp one of our two docks has a ramp from land to the dock.  Much of the winter we had ice and high water . Result, the dock moved nearly ten feet and an end of the heavy ramp fell into the water.  I studied and moved and repeat study and move to get the ramp out of the water, onto the dock then onto a ladder used as a skid or inclined plane to coax the ramp back to the correct land and dock positions.

A  problem solving exercise.  My crow bar, a twelve foot pressure treated 4x8 and various pipes and ropes helped to push, pull, tie off and pry the four log dock and four board ramp.  Fun and distracted.

Laptop computers.

My first departure desktop to laptop was May 2003.  

An upgrade November, 2012. 

NOW, Tuesday a spur of the moment time to stop looking at options but to make it happen.

April  30, 2024. I bought a  third laptop.  The other two still have features and stored photos.

Nine years and this time under twelve years to upgrade.  The software and hardware advances are impressive.

Most of this blog note is for me. 

Approaching (almost)

 Seventy degrees feels pleasant.  Near the ocean any wind off the water is always biting.  Today with a North wind  the ocean breeze is  nullified.  Not 52F but thinking about 69F.

MISSING what about the ICE.

 The precipitation ended as freezing rain. A silent accumulation. Silent except for the power outages.

Following morning revealed ice coated branches bending with added weight.

Everywhere pine, river birch and other trees broken.

The 2024 ice storm further south than forecast.

Spring but March spring still means snow.

 Snow all morning and now rain near the coast. Total liquid above one and one half inch so over a foot of snow  in the high elevations.

Total season snowfall will now be low but not the lowest recorded amount. When to stop expecting more snow?  April 20 and later.  

Spring is near.

Spring based on the sun rising due East, and setting due West.

For those at the equator the sun overhead at noon shifts from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere. Having said that, the precise position of the sun and of the moon high in the sky is difficult to discern. 

An aside for only me, my current one line one day journal is divided such that each page starts at new moon. My previous one line journal started as one line on each day meaning the first of each month shifted.

 Young in early 60's.  I was still jogging a 10 kilometer run on each birthday 55, 56, 57, up to maybe 63??

Now my current each day log shows I have walked most every fall, winter, spring   day   since April, 2019.

Each page of my log  has 27 lines (one day, one line). I just completed page 43.  

27 times 43 equals something over 1140 days of walking.

A record minimum snowfall for the the month (Portland, Maine)

 February 2024 even with 29 days had a record minimum total snow fall.

The liquid number was 0.67 and the snow was 0.6 inches.

MSP  showed 7 inches for the month with 6.9 falling on Valentine's Day, 2/14/2024.

Omaha showed  0.8 inches of snow for the month

Keyboard or tablet postings?

 This post is by  tablet.  Suggested words speed things up.  

Middle of the range February temperatures are fine.  Mostly above plus 10F over night. 

So far no below zero.  Our propane dealer has done better the last two years.  Delivery service at forty percent rather than one deivery at 98 gallons in a 98 gallon tank. (Four years ago,  but I have a long memory)

We recently noticed a drip drip under our combined furnace and hot water heater.  I was hoping it was condensation but doubtful in a cold winter  basement.  I need to lay under that area for fifteen minutes to pinpoint the source. 

Software crunches the numbers quickly ( quickly) in weather forecasting models

 The first generation of forecast models (on computers of that era) took one day to arrive at a twelve hour forecast. So after the fact forecasts made no sense.  

So what changed? Super computers ( often networked computers) could crunch huge amounts of data very fast.  A six hour forecast produced in five minutes. Now the National Weather Service and separately NOAA have huge processing centers in Maryland, Colorado and I believe in Oklahoma. Each specializes, one in forecasts, one in severe weather and one in research.

February cards must go in the mail.

 TIME  FLYS.    I set out cards to mail and then quickly time is up. I missed the mailing time. The card arrives after the birthday.  This is both a month of February post and a reminder for me.

 I enjoy cleaning common areas with one of three metal shovels. (Long handle aluminium,  grain scoop same material and a D handle steel dirt shovel).

My grain scoop is well worn  as is each other shovel.

 In January I have success as above. Yes, limited success.

My task is to deal with excess paper.

Stacks of paper and monthly files from the previous year are examples. I am starting to use what I call smooth logs. Rough logs are scratch paper copies of various sorted and compiled topics. Then I try to do a final edit and neatly record the rough logs into smooth copies.

I guess most of this entry is for me. I get what I am trying to say. In the future if you see my smooth logs I hope you see neat and organized history.

 Thursday, January 11 an afternoon of farewell and final tributes.

Noon gathering.
One thirty funeral service.
Military tribute.
Interment.

Time of social gathering.

Now the reminders will come and go.

The memory will always live on.

The LEGACY is solid and in place.

The news after December 5 was a steady and sad decline.

 So a month later Ron passed.  

We flew Christmas Day and yesterday 1/4/2024

When I rent a car in a location with thousands of other cars, I am anxious. Will I survive the rental period without an incident? Because of density of traffic the number of fools accelerating toward a fresh red light seems ...... You fill in the blank. BUT we are back home. Horse show, parade, float construction and up close viewing all are in the mind and in photos.
